Is it more than a sprain: Why a fall on an outstretched hand needs attention

It is instinct to put your hands out to break your fall when you trip. While you might walk away thinking you’ve just suffered a minor wrist sprain, persistent pain at the base of your thumb could indicate something much more specific, such as a fracture of the scaphoid bone.
The scaphoid is a small bone located on the thumb side of your wrist. Despite its small size, it plays a massive role in wrist stability and movement. Unfortunately, it is also notorious in the medical world for its unique blood supply. Because blood flows from one end of the bone to the other, a break can easily cut off the blood supply to part of the bone, leading to a high risk of the bone failing to heal if left untreated.
Spotting the Hidden Symptoms
Because a scaphoid fracture rarely causes a dramatic, visible deformity, many patients mistake it for a sprain and try to see how it goes. You should have your wrist assessed by a specialist if you experience:
Pain and tenderness specifically in the anatomical snuffbox, the small triangular depression at the base of your thumb when you extend it fully, especially if pain persists for more than two to three weeks.
Swelling on the thumb side of the wrist.
Pain when pinching or gripping objects.
The importance of an expert diagnosis
Scaphoid fractures are famously difficult to spot on standard X-rays immediately after an injury. If Mr Shyamalan suspects a fracture but the initial X-ray looks clear, he will often arrange an MRI or CT scan to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
Treatment hinges on the location of the break and whether the bone fragments have shifted:
Non displaced fractures: If the bone pieces are perfectly aligned, the fracture can typically be treated non surgically by immobilising the wrist in a cast for several weeks.
Displaced fractures: If the bone has shifted, or if the break is in a section with poor blood supply, surgery is usually recommended. Mr Shyamalan uses a specialised, precise screw to compress and fix the bone fragments together, providing the immediate stability required for the bone to knit back together properly.
If you've recently suffered a wrist injury, don't leave your recovery to chance. Prompt expert evaluation is the best way to safeguard your long term hand function.
