Hand lumps and bumps
Finding a lump or bump on your hand or wrist can be a concerning experience. Fortunately, the vast majority of hand lumps and bumps are benign (non cancerous) and can be easily diagnosed and treated by a specialist. The most common type of hand lump is a ganglion cyst.

What are the symptoms of a hand lump or bump?

A hand lump can vary in size, shape, and location. Common symptoms include:
-
A visible lump: A bump that may feel soft or firm to the touch.
-
Pain or discomfort: While many lumps are painless, some can cause a dull ache, especially if they press on a nerve or joint.
-
Reduced range of motion: A large lump may interfere with the movement of a finger or wrist.
How are hand lumps diagnosed?

A hand surgeon can usually diagnose the nature of the lump through a physical examination. To confirm the diagnosis and to assess if the lump is solid or filled with fluid, an ultrasound scan is often used. This imaging technique is excellent for identifying ganglion cysts and other common hand lumps. An MRI may also be used for a more detailed look at the anatomy.

How are hand lumps and bumps treated?

Treatment for a hand lump depends on the type of lump and whether it is causing symptoms.
-
Observation: If the lump is painless and not interfering with function, a "wait and see" approach may be the best course of action.
-
Aspiration: For a ganglion cyst, a simple procedure called aspiration can be performed to drain the fluid from the cyst. While this is effective, the cyst can sometimes recur.
-
Surgical excision: Surgical removal is often recommended for lumps that are painful, growing in size, or recurring after aspiration. This is a definitive treatment option with a high success rate.
