Case in the Spotlight: Helping a Lifelong Biker Get Back on the Throttle

At Midland Hand Clinic, we believe that hand health isn’t just about anatomy, it’s about lifestyle. For John Brown, a motorcycle paramedic with a lifelong passion for two wheels, his hands are quite literally his livelihood and his freedom.

A Life Defined by Resilience

John’s connection to motorcycles started at age 16, following in the footsteps of his bike enthusiast father. His career has been equally high octane, moving from the fire service to becoming a motorcycle paramedic, a role he describes as a "dream come true."

Thirteen years ago, John faced a major hurdle when an on duty accident resulted in the loss of his leg. Most would have hung up their helmet, but John was back on his bike as soon as possible. However, earlier this year, a new problem began to surface, one that started in his hands.

The Challenge: Losing Control

John began developing classic but severe symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

"It began with tingling and loss of feeling in my fingers," John explains. "It got so bad that I couldn’t even hold my knife and fork when eating. It also affected my riding as I couldn’t turn the throttle."

For a daily rider, losing the ability to safely operate the throttle is more than an inconvenience; it’s a loss of independence.

The Specialist Solution

Following a recommendation from a family member, John sought the expertise of hand and wrist specialist Mr Shyamalan.

After an initial consultation, Mr. Shyamalan diagnosed the issue and moved quickly to provide a solution.

The efficiency of the process was a highlight for John. Following his diagnosis, the surgery was scheduled for the following week. At Midland Hand Clinic, we often use the WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anaesthetic No Tourniquet) technique for carpal tunnel releases, allowing for a faster, safer, and more interactive patient experience.

The Result: 4,000 Miles of Freedom

The recovery was almost immediate. Within 48 hours of the procedure, John had regained full feeling and use of his hand, and the debilitating pain was gone.

"Mr Shyamalan and his team were great," John says. "I felt reassured throughout the entire process."

The ultimate proof of success came just six weeks later. With his hand strength restored and his symptoms resolved, John embarked on a 4,000-mile motorcycle tour around Europe. Today, he is already busy planning his next adventure.
